Grown Local Mendo Lake retailers play a vital role in the success of the branding. In order to be a member organization, each retailer must have it’s corporate headquarters in Lake or Mendocino County. We’re proud of the quality of the retailers we’ve partnered with, and we encourage you to shop at their stores. We will be adding additional members including restaurants in the coming weeks and months.
In the meantime, please say hello to our partners:
Ukiah Natural Foods Co-op was incorporated in 1976. By serving the needs of our diverse membership, we have grown through the years. Our current store has more than 6,800 square feet of retail space, and we serve over a thousand shoppers each day.
To the casual visitor, Ukiah Natural Foods Co-op is simply a retail store that specializes in natural and organic foods, supplements and related items. However, at a fundamental level, we are very different from profit-oriented enterprises.
Like the thousands of other cooperatives around the world, Ukiah Natural Foods Co-op is owned by its member-owners. Currently, the co-op has more than 6,700 member-owners. The member-owners can vote not only with their dollars, as in a regular store, but also with their ballots.
The purchasing power of our member-owners is magnified by working with 136 other cooperatives in 37 states, through the National Cooperative Grocers. The NCG stores have combined annual sales of $1.6 billion.
Ukiah Natural Foods is your locally owned and operated community grocery store!
The Ukiah Natural Foods Co-op is located at 721 South State Street in Ukiah. They can be reached via phone at 707 462-4778. UkiahCoop.com

Surf Market was founded in 1956 to serve the needs of the logging, hunting, and fishing community of Gualala. Since that time they’ve grown from a 3 person mom and pop, to the largest supermarket in their area with a well trained staff of 45.
In the old days you could find frozen meat just down the aisle from the gun and ammunition selection. Today, 60 years later, the market offers an amazing selection of quality products featuring locally made artisan foods, sustainable seafood, local and organic produce, specialty cheeses, hot and cold deli offerings, a large hand picked selection of wine and spirits, and yummy baked goods; additionally they have one of the finest meat departments in Northern California.
The mission is to be a true benefit to the community. Surf has been working for many decades to create a market that serves the needs of its customers, while supporting and benefitting vendors, staff, non-profit community, and taking good care of the environment. It’s a source of great pleasure that, to a large degree, Surf Market is achieving its mission.
However, the industry is changing and Surf realizes it has a lot of work to do. Large multinational corporations and online stores are spending billions of dollars trying to convince consumers that low prices, convenient locations, and home delivery are the most important criteria to consider when buying food. Surf believes that locally crafted, environmentally conscious, organic foods are better; and that spending a few more dollars to support a locally owned store creates far more community benefit than enriching massive corporations. Surf hopes that you select them as you favorite grocery store on the South Coast, but even if you don’t, they hope your favorite is locally owned.
You can find Surf Market at 39250 Highway 1 in Gualala. They can be reached via phone at 707 884-4184. SurfSuper.com.
