It’s June and things get a bit busy. Here is a special event we hope you will calendar now so you won’t miss it.
On Thursday, June 23rd the Willits Farmer’s Market will be making a special appearance at Willits’ Local First Hometown Celebration. The Farmers’ Market will set up in the old Rexall parking lot in downtown Willits on Main and W. Mendocino from 4-7 pm. The full market will be there including local (Mendocino County) farmers with their fresh produce, veggies and berries picked that morning. There are local ranchers with beef, lamb, pork, eggs and cheeses.
The prepared food vendors have anything from snacks to full meals prepared for you to take home or enjoy during the Hometown Festival. There are a variety of craftspeople, others selling cooking oils, fermented foods, cut flowers, plant starts, skin products, jewelry makers, handmade soaps, fresh roasted coffee beans and grains, chocolate. Our local Farmers’ Market musicians will be there keeping the joy of the market lively with their uplifting, sing-able and danceable selections.
An ongoing money saver is a plan called Market Match. Use your Cal Fresh/EBT card and the Market will double your dollars for fresh fruits and vegetables. Via a federal grant program, the market will match you dollar for dollar (up to $15). This means you can spend $15 and get $30 to spend at the market. See Michael Foley at the manager’s table for all the details. Getting our groceries directly from the producer bypasses the middle man which results in additional savings plus support for our local farmers.
There is a special program from June 9th to July 14th for children called the Power of Produce (POP) which is a free club that 5-12 year olds can join. Ask about it at the market. Kids are given snacks and green bucks with which to buy their own produce. This is a national program with local sponsors including Sparetime Supply, Mariposa market, Savings Bank of Mendocino County, and North Coast Opportunities. The POP Club has been very popular with parents and kids.
Also present June 23rd will be the countywide famous “Smoothie Bike” loaned to us by NCO for the day. For free you will be able to select your choice of veggies and fruits and pedal the bike until you power up your own smoothie.
You can find the regular Farmer’s Market every Thursday 3:00-6:30 in Bud Snyder Park on Humboldt and State St.
